"Broadway: 100 Years in 100 Minutes" presentation
Musical films are making a comeback in America! The popularity of "Chicago,”
“Nine,” and “Glee,” to name a few, shows the new popularity
of the genre. Come feast your ears as the head of the music
composition program at Elizabeth City State University unfolds a fast-paced and
fun history of musicals in two acts: I. their origins in burlesque and vaudeville and
II. Broadway’s recent rebirth. Let Dr. Palestrant show you why he was named a
University of North Carolina Board of Governor’s Teacher of the Year in 2010.

You’re bound to leave the class thinking, I Could Have Danced All Night.

"Big Music in the Movies" presentation at the historic Naro Theatre
Did you know that when George Lucas was directing Star Wars in 1977, he needed
something new for his theme music? John Williams gave it to him: a style taken
from... an opera written back in 1869! It resulted in one of the most popular – and
important – film scores ever composed. Come munch on some popcorn and learn
from Dr. Palestrant, Professor of Music Composition and Theory at Elizabeth
City State University, specific connections he has found between movie scores and
Romantic-era music, the power of that music, and the effect it has on the movie
viewer. It will change the way you watch movies forever!
